I haven't been writing because there's been nothing notable to talk about. All I've been doing is grinding. (I don't mind the grind, btw. It's just... boring?)
Then I see this post from an Internet stranger: So I'll continue writing, just in case another Internet stranger needs to feel less alone. But importantly, I must write for myself.
If you read this at a much later date, you won't know that I haven't been writing. Because I'm going to backfill all the missing posts.
Who am I again? I don't even recognise myself. I hope I don't crash out tomorrow.
The Darknet Diaries episode I was listening to - "Maxie" - is amazing. Maxie Reynolds started out with a degree in underwater robotics (!), learnt to fly a Cessna plane and helicopters (!!), then got fascinated with IT and got a degree in computer science (!), was a stuntwoman (!!) for indie films for awhile, then eventually got into social engineering and penetration testing. She also wrote a book The Art of Attack, on how ethical hackers can adopt an attacker mindset to their advantage.
The best part of the episode was how she tied her past experience with underwater / remote operating vehicles with her current cybersecurity work - because she now has her own company Subsea Cloud - an UNDERWATER DATA CENTRE! OMGWTFBBQ I had never heard of such a thing?! Just when I was beginning to think that there's nothing new in this world anymore. 🥹
I didn't want to end my walk and hit 5,232 steps because the episode was so interesting. You have to listen to it.Â
My other favourite bit was her life model:
My model in life is like, if I’m free to do it and I want to do it, then I will do it. I kind of always want to be infatuated with what I’m doing and focused. I’m okay if whatever the thing is that I want to do changes, and it has, obviously.Â
But I want to love what I do, because functionally I’ve got max seventy good years, and I want to do — well, we might do two interesting things a year.Â
So, I’ve got 140 interesting things that I’ll do in my life. That doesn’t sound like a lot. So, I just always wanted to do the things that were most interesting, that would get me the most sort of interesting, exciting experiences.
BY FAR THE MOST INTERESTING PERSON EVER OR WHAT?!
Anyhoo, I'm going to wrap this up, go buy dinner, and start respecting my sleep time from now on. No more revenge bedtime procrastination so I can sleep sufficiently and do 140 more interesting things in this life.
Made progress on important goals.
How good does it feel to complete every one of my time boxes? ^_^
I built and sold two brick & mortar food businesses between 2006-2019.
Now that I'm semi-retired, I ask myself, "What if I spend 10,000 hours chasing curiosity?"
10k to $10k is a live changelog of my journey to see if following my interests "fvcking around and finding out" can make me $10,000 a month. All while living the slowmad life I've designed.
Here's my official first post on this blog. Everything before this date is backfilled.
I have dyslexia, ADHD, and Tourette's. If I've made it this far in life, so can you.
